The University of Bristol recently studied more than a million adults in England and found out  that 80% don’t meet the government target of taking moderate exercise at least 12 times a month.

Well there’s a surprise… I’d have thought that the fact we’re one of the most obese countries in the world would have been a bit of a clue.

I bet you didn’t know there were government targets for that sort of thing. I certainly didn’t. If you watched my recent vlog on the NHS, you’d be forgiven for thinking the government don’t give a monkey’s about our health in real terms.

But this study did come up with some interesting findings. If you’re well-off or well-educated you’re more likely to exercise, while the poorer and least educated are most likely to be inactive. Well that’s one up for my commandment number 9 ‘Thou shalt educate thyself’.

It also found that 46% who were physically able to walk had not walked for more than 30 minutes continuously even once in a month. Carol Propper, one of the professors on the team, said: ‘Physical inactivity is the most important modifiable health behaviour for chronic disease’. I think that means that increasing the amount you  exercise is the quickest and easiest way to avoid cancer, heart disease arthritis, diabetes, stroke and all those other 20th century conditions we bring on ourselves. So there you are …Commandment for health number 1 – ahead of drinking water, supplementing your nutrition, eating good food….ahead of them all is… thou shalt oxygenate with correct exercise. I’ve been endorsed and supported by no less than the good professor.
